Bear Resources

Welcome to bear country! Bear activity is common in this area, making bear-resistant trash storage is essential for the safety of both residents and wildlife. Remember: a fed bear is a dead bear. We ask everyone in our community to do their part to protect our wildlife.

Bear-Resistant Cans

Bear-resistant cans provide a critical layer of defense. Their specialized locking lids significantly reduce the chance of a bear accessing your garbage. While they are bear-resistant rather than entirely bear-proof, investing in one is strongly recommended.

Wait Until Morning

Place trash out the morning of pickup rather than the night before to minimize exposure. Avoid leaving waste sitting in outdoor cans for extended periods.

Bag and Tie Everything

Bagging all trash and double-bagging food scraps drastically reduces scent trails

Neutralize Scents

Spray your cans with household ammonia to mask food odors.

(Note: Never use bear spray or pepper spray on cans)

Secure the Can

Strap your can upright to a sturdy post or tree using heavy-duty ratchet straps (rated for at least 1,000 lbs). This prevents bears from tipping the container or using leverage to compromise the lid.
